Find what fits

Well hello everyone! Today I’ve gone off the topic of food to talk to you about my second favourite subject: phys!

It sounds strange for me to say that because if you’d have known me 6 years ago, (well, maybe 3 really!) phys would definitely not have come anywhere near my top 10 favourite things! Probably bottom of the pile. I only started exercising because I had to, and I hated every second of it. I was forced to run, and for someone who’s never exercised in their life, running is potentially not the best place to start!

I’m required to have a certain level of fitness for my job, so for the first 3 years of my career I just ran when I had to, because I had to. It wasn’t until I discovered that running could be a great mental release that I started to get real joy from it.

Running became my thing. I loved running further and faster. I loved the sense of achievement from finishing a race, and the camaraderie of being part of a running club. Having spent much of this year injured however, running has lost its edge a bit for me right now. I took up other sports while I was recovering from shin splints, like swimming and cycling, but nothing else gave me the same buzz. I’ve been feeling pretty down about this, especially after getting a calf injury a few weeks ago and being off again! But then I discovered CrossFit, and I am suddenly getting that exercise high again that running gives me, maybe even more so!

I’ve only been going less than 2 weeks but right now I am absolutely loving it. I am having a great time meeting new people, trying new things and pushing myself harder than I ever would in the gym. It is making me so happy right now and given me something else to focus on and feel like I’m getting stronger and fitter even while I can’t run. Maybe it will wear off, maybe I will get bored of it at some time in the future, who knows. My point is that right now, it gives me something to really look forward to every day and I always leave with a smile on my face (even if the rest of my body is shaking)!

So if you’re stuck in a bit of an exercise rut right now, my advice to you is to try something new. Think about something you’d really like to do and find a class or club in your area, or have a look online to get some ideas. If you’re not into exercise at all, then please go try out lots of different classes and see what suits you. I’d be really surprised if you tried a range of sports/classes from dance to cycling to rowing to, I don’t know, skiing, and didn’t get an ounce of enjoyment out of any of them! And then once you’ve found something, ride that wave! Don’t take it too seriously at first; if you’re enjoying being there in that moment, who cares about the future? The point is you are having a great time now and getting the most out of your day. If you fall out of love with it eventually, you’ll find something else!

I will get back into running, I’ve already got 2 marathons booked for next year! But for now, I’m off to CrossFit and I can’t wait!!
