This week for some reason (I think it’s the weather), I’ve found it really hard to get out the door when it comes to running!
It’s not that I don’t want to workout, I’d quite happily do a workout at home, I’ve just not wanted to be outside! I’m going to put it down to the weather, and that I’ve finished my walk to run program so I suppose I’ve lost my mojo somewhat – a little “what now?” feeling.
I did actually start to write a new plan, which I need to finish off now! It’ll hopefully help me get my speed up a bit now that I’m running 3/4 miles pain free! Then I’m thinking to gradually increase the weekend “long run” up to around 6/8 miles. We’ll see how it goes!
So anyway, how did I find motivation to get out the door this week? Well, the main thing for me is to think about how I’m going to feel afterwards in the short term, but also think long term as well. If I want to get my 5k down, I need to make the effort to go running right?! So I know that straight after a run, I’ll feel good for having done it, but also 8 weeks from now, when I’ve made a dent in my current 5k time, I’ll be feeling even better!
Other things that help me keep up my motivation are:
- Reading running blogs/magazines that inspire me
- Setting goals (and creating plans to help me get there)
- Picking great music/podcasts to listen to while I run
- Thinking about where I will be in “x” weeks if I do run and also where I will be if I don’t!
- Trying new routes
- Strava… let’s face it
- Sometimes a new item of clothing will give me added umph!
So those are the ways I try and stay motivated when it comes to going running! It’s not often that I have a bit of a slump, but when I do it’s good to have some techniques to give me that extra push out the door!
