We ordered a taxi from the hotel to Kuta where Chris and Annika were staying for a few days, but on the way managed to bargain with our driver who agreed to take us to Kuta, then up to Tanah Lot, wait for us there for a few hours, then back to Kuta to drop Chris, Annika and I off and then drop Tony back in Sanur all for 500,000IDR (which was about £30 for all 4 of us)! I don’t care what you say, if you are an experienced Balinese-haggler or whatever, but I was pretty pleased with paying less than a tenner for a private taxi service for the day!

Adventures in Bali | Day 4 | Incredible sunrise trek …

For about 20/30 minutes the pace was fast but it was relatively flat, and we were able to push on even as we started to climb. As we went along, I started chatting to our guide, Widi as I was right behind her. I was utterly astounded to hear that she goes to Mount Batur to guide tourists to the summit, and on her return she then goes to school. 6 days a week.

Following our rice field escapades we ended up eating lunch out of a banana leaf next to a river. Without cutlery. The authentic way apparently, though with only the ‘tourist’ spice levels! So yes, a somewhat novel experience to try and eat curry and rice with your fingers that’s for sure! But I loved every moment of it all the same.
